Flavored Popcorn

Ready for a family night at home? Rent a movie, make some popcorn, and settle in for a cozy and relaxing evening. Let the kids roll out their sleeping bags on the floor for a camp out in the TV room.

If  you are planning a party with guests who like to munch on crunchy treats put out big bowls of Flavored Popcorn.

Did you know that corn popping was originally discovered by Native Americans, but became popular as a snack food during the United States Great Depression? Selling pop corn was a source of income for struggling farmers. During World War II, sugar rations diminished candy production causing Americans to eat more pop corn. Today, pop corn is a favorite treat for all ages.

Air-popped popcorn is naturally high in fiber, low in calories and fat, contains no sodium, and is sugar free. This can make it an attractive snack to people with dietary restrictions.  To increase flavor, however, large amounts of fat, sugar, and sodium are often added to prepared popcorn, which can quickly convert it to a very poor choice. Spice mixes add flavor without adding fat and sugar.

2 tablespoons salt
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Black Pepper
1 pinch Watkins Cayenne Pepper

Southwestern Popcorn

1 1/2 teaspoons Watkins Chili Powder

Italian Popcorn

1/4 cup finely grated (about 1/2 ounce) Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Oregano

1/4 teaspoon crushed Watkins Red-pepper Flakes

Curry Popcorn

1 tablespoon Watkins Curry Powder
2 tablespoons salt
1/4 teaspoon Watkins Black Pepper

For each of these popcorn spice mixes, place all of the ingredients in a medium bowl; stir until they are combined, and transfer to an airtight container for storage. All of the variations can be doubled or tripled, depending on the size of the container you plan to use. The Italian mixture should be kept in the refrigerator, as it contains fresh cheese.

Pop corn, use as is or spray with a little butter-flavored spray, and sprinkle with flavored spice mix to taste.
