How is your green journey going? I am most pleased that my small city is finally making moves toward saving energy, sustainability and more. They are recognizing finally that they play a leadership role and that a city can have a big and negative impact on our environment.
It is my hope that if more cities take a stand, the residents will as well.
How does your city stack up? Don’t know? No worries-I know that you aren’t the only one-but it’s not too late to learn. Here’s how you can find out-and also make an impact in your city:
- Attend city meetings (many) where (I promise) you will learn a ton.
- Every chance you get for public input, step forward and ask the city to consider standing up for the green.
- Be the naysayer. Is the city planning on purchasing more vehicles? Ask what they are doing to reduce car emissions on the environment. Is there a way to buy hybrid vehicles, perhaps?
- Join committees within the city’s government that have an opportunity to impact the environment.
- Speak up and insist that the city show leadership in caring for our environment.
- Consult specialists and research when you have a question about a city activity being environmentally-friendly.
- Report your findings after researching to the city council when the opportunity for public comment arises. Also, many commissioners and council members are available via email so make use of that.
- Gather support from friends and neighbors who also care about the environment. A group of ten speaks louder than a group of two.
- Use the masses for additional support. Remind the council and committee members that more and more people are considering green places when they travel, etc.
- Follow up when you have requested more information or a change. Express disappointment if a decision is made that is not environmentally friendly and express your pleasure when the decision makers make a positive change for our world.
