I can’t help it! I’m a sucker for books that center around crafts. Like I said yesterday, I was turned on to a series called the Blossom Street Series and I promised a review of the first book, so here it is.
The series is written by Debbie Macomber who also has several other books and series published. She is one of those writers who has such as an easy feeling to her writings that you can’t help but burn dinner because you’re standing in the kitchen getting through “just one more chapter.” No, that didn’t happen to me, but it easily could have had I exercised such awesome self-control.
The book premise is simple. Lydia, a two-time survivor of cancer, has decided to open a yarn shop (called “A Good Yarn”) as an affirmation to life. As every crafter knows, people are always looking for classes and trying to learn new crafts. So, she starts a class for beginners and the project is knitting a baby blanket. Her students include Jacqueline, a socialite who is on the verge of becoming a grandmother for the first time, Carol, a woman who is having trouble conceiving her first child, and Alix (spelled with an “i”) who is knitting to satisfy her community service hours and her anger management counselor.
This book oozes “chick lit” and I loved it. It’s an easy read that you really can’t put down and as soon as you finish, you’re going to want to start the second book in the series. If you like The Friday Night Knitting Club or the Elm Creek Quilts series, you’ll love this series of books. And, just like when I read Eat, Pray, Love, I went out and bought a CD to learn Italian, I’ve already purchased some yarn and dug out my knitting needles. Someone’s getting a scarf for Christmas this year.

Angela, this series sounds very interesting. I used to be an avid reader in my pre-chldren days. Now I am too busy to make the time to sit with a book, plus it makes me sleepy. I used to read at night before bed, but now I drop when I hit the bed. I really am going to make an effort to get reading again, I feel so left out when I hear others talk about the books they are reading.
I just read the latest book in the series, Twenty Wishes. I’m also inspired to knit and will be taking a beginner’s class…just like the one Lydia teaches!
