Book Gift Ideas

Is your family like mine? Either they already have everything you’ve already thought to buy them or they are incredibly picky? Ok, so mine isn’t really like that. But I am very picky about what I give people as gifts. I want the gift to be thoughtful, appropriate, and – most importantly – within my budget.

Here are a couple gift ideas that might just work. Special thanks to Hatchette Book Group for helping me put this together!

For the music-loving husband or brother: Cobain Unseen

This book is truly unique. Highlighting the ups and downs and creative path of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, this book takes you on a fascinating (although, admittedly, depressing) journey through the struggles and successes and ultimate end of Cobain’s life. The book is unique because it’s set up almost like a scrapbook. There are pages that unfold that show scans of Cobain’s artwork, record labels he hand wrote tucked into pockets, and copies of his original cartoons that open like a mini-book within the book. I love the layout and creative publishing approach to this book. Cobain Unseen is sure to be a hit with that family member who is fascinated with musical history or biographies of musicians.

For the sports fan: Beyond Belief

I love a great comeback story. Don’t you? I watched the MLB All Star game and homerun derby and was on the verge of tears watching Josh Hamilton perform so well. His story is one of drugs, desperation and redemption. He was kicked out of baseball for his drug use, got clean, petitioned the league to take him back, and now he is a man on a mission. This story is unbelievable. The writing of Beyond Belief is very honest and straight-forward. Even if you’re not a sports fan, I have a feeling you will enjoy this book about the ultimate comeback: returning to a life truly worth living. I for one can’t wait to see what Josh does next.

For the Business-Minded Individual: Launching a Leadership Revolution

Every business leader or aspiring business person knows that leadership is a quality you absolutely have to have to succeed. Many suggest that people are either born leaders or they are not. This book takes you through what they refer to as the Five Levels of Influence (Learn, Perform, Lead, Develop Leaders, Develop Leaders who Develop Leaders) as you grow as a leader and realize that just leading isn’t enough. Similar to the premise behind Level 5 Leadership from Good to Great, Launching a Leadership Revolution: Mastering the Five Levels of Influence is all about how you give back and encourage others to step up to the plate and take the lead. This book is extremely thought-provoking as you find yourself analyzing your leadership style and setting goals to reach the next level. Let’s face it, no one is perfect. But this book definitely made me re-evaluate some things as a business woman and as a person in general.

For Catholics or Other Spiritually-Minded Friends: The Rosary: A Journey to the Beloved

As a Catholic, I often get lots of question about the rosary. How it works, why we pray that way, what is it exactly… And it is sometimes difficult to explain. This book breaks down what the rosary is and how you pray it and suggests meditations to ponder during the prayers. The Rosary: A Journey to the Beloved (Faithwords) is perfect for people who are looking to deepen their experiences with the rosary or people who want to learn more about it in general.

For the Too-Busy People in Your Life: 100 Ways to Simplify Your Life

Joyce Meyer is at it again. Known to many as the practical preacher, Joyce gives tons of tips for turning your crazy, over-scheduled life into one that you can really enjoy rather than struggle to keep up with it. Most of these tips are simple in theory and each tip is packed with suggestions and examples from Joyce’s life that will help you take your life and re-organize it into a peaceful existence. 100 Ways to Simplify Your Life includes things like “Don’t worry about tomorrow” and “Don’t procrastinate.” You may be thinking, “Sure that sounds great, but how do you actually do that?” Never fear! This book will help you get your life on track and focus on what is truly important on a daily basis.
