Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to celebrate with friends and family, and it’s also a great time to get children involved. Thanksgiving is a holiday with tons of potential to teach children about thankfulness, gratefulness, etc. Having a kids’ only Thanksgiving party is one great way to do that.
While a kids’ only Thanksgiving party sounds simple enough, it might not be as easy as you think. Yes, you can get away with less “fancy fluff” but children can be harder to please and entertain then adults. If you are going to host a kids’ only Thanksgiving party, planning and preparation are the key.
1. The first, and most obvious step: Invite the Guests! If you have older children or teenagers, this can be as simple as letting them invite their own guests. But, if you have younger children or your children don’t want to do the inviting you may have to create the guest list on your own. Sticking to one age group will make planning easier and you could invite children from your child’s class, daycare, or neighborhood or invite other children who are related to your child.
2. Food & Drinks – Now that invitations are out, you need to start thinking food, snacks and drinks. Since this is a kids’ only party, a full Thanksgiving dinner may not be necessary. Depending on the time of day, snacks may be enough. Keep in mind that kids are often picky eaters. so make sure to provide a variety so there is something for everyone. Choose foods that are kid friendly and make sure to include a good variety of healthy options. You should also consider any allergies that may need special attention. 3. Games – No matter what type of kids’ party you host – Thanksgiving party, Christmas party, birthday party, etc – kids need to be entertained and games are the perfect solution. Since this is a Thanksgiving party, you may want to choose holiday games or give traditional games a holiday twist but that’s not necessary. The internet is a great source for holiday party game ideas. Krafty Kids is a great source for craft kits that are very affordable and ready to go and Printable Games A to Z offers games you can print off right at home. While having your party games planned out is important, make sure you leave room for suggestions as well and let your kids help choose which games to play. They will have plenty more fun that way. Have a plan – but be flexible.
4. Plan for Parents – Depending on the age of your children, you may have parents who stay for the party as well. This can be a welcome addition to the part with additional hands to help with the kids. You should prepare a few adult snacks and perhaps some board games to keep your adult guests entertained as well.
