Madagascar 2: Escape To Africa Review

Last night we decided to take the kids to see Madagascar two. My best friend and her family joined us. It was opening night, and the theatre was packed! I had heard good things about this movie, and it did not disappoint.

In most cases, when they make a sequel to a popular kids cartoon, it flops. It’s never as good as the first one right? Madagascar was definitely an exception. This movie had a number of things going for it. My best friend agreed that it was definitely funnier then the first movie and we definitely laughed a lot. For the most part, it was pretty clean to. There were a few places in Madagascar where the jokes were a little on the adult side, but this one didn’t have much of that which was nice. It’s always refreshing to watch a movie everyone can enjoy, both kids and adults, without getting a little off-color.

I think one thing that made Madagascar 2 such a great movie was the range of relationships it explored. The first movie centered mainly around the relationship between Alex the Lion and his best friend Marty the Zebra.  In Madagascar 2, they develop that relationship a bit more as well but they also work with the relationship between Alex and his parents, as well as some romantic relationships among the other characters. All put together, it makes for a very engaging plot line.

Oh and did I mention the movie is GORGEOUS? Set in Africa, the settings and the animals are just beautiful!

Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa makes a great family night movie, and is a definite must see. We will be adding it to your movie library when it comes out on DVD as well.

I’m A Pink Mom

It’s October 1st – the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at Moms In A Blog, we wanted to do something to mark this month. Most of us have been touched by breast cancer in some way. I have been personally touched by breast cancer and cancer in generally in both my family and my husbands, so it is something that means a lot to me.

SO what can you do to help raise awareness this month?

1. Grab the I’m A Pink Mom Button for your blog and help spread the word!

2. Blog about how your life has been touched by cancer and/or breast cancer. Make sure you leave a link in the comments so we can stop by and read your story.

3. Encourage your loved ones to have a mammogram done or do a self exam (depending on age/risk). And, make sure you do one yourself as well!

Join us, and our fellow Pink MOMS! If you have the Pink Moms banner up, please add your link to our Mr. Linky so we can stop by and say thank you. Take the time to visit other Pink Moms on the list as well this month.

Parents on Dr. Phil

I spent this weekend working at a expo promoting the magazine, so my boss gave me the afternoon off today:) I decided to relax at home and catch some shows that I generally miss – including Dr. Phil. It was a very interesting show, featuring Lenore of Free Range Kids.  Some of you may best remember her as the mother who sparked a huge controversy when she decided to let her 9 year old son ride a NY subway alone.

You will probably be very surprised to hear that Dr. Phil did not disagree with her decision and his show was actually quite interesting. Now, I don’t think I would go as far as to say I would allow my  9 year old alone on a subway in NY anytime soon, but I do agree that our society has become very very overprotective. Kneepads and helmets for kids so they don’t get scraps and bruises while learning to crawl/walk? Seriously?

Dr. Phil’s show talked about how many parents have become so worried about the “dangers” that instead of teaching our children how to deal with those dangers, we just keep them from experiencing things they are ready to experience. This show isn’t about being irresponsible. You need to teach your children safety rules and be realistic about what your child is capable of because each child is different – but then you need to allow your child to try new things and learn how to work with the world around them.

I know I have a tendancy to error on the side of underprotective but here is my view (which I know many people will disagree with). The line between overprotecting and underprotecting is VERY thin. I try to do my best to walk that line, but I would rather error on the side of slighty underprotective then to raise children who are incapable of taking care of themselves as they grow up. Do I know there are many dangers in the world? yes. Does that scare me? yes. But – we can only protect our children so much and the rest we must leave to God.

What do you think? Would you rather overprotect or underprotect your child?

Exciting New Product Launch For Parents!

Do you have a daughter? I have two, and if you are anything like me, you are going to be very excited about the newest offering from Beauty By Design Ministries. Alyssa Avant, the founder of Beauty By Design, has a passion for reaching today’s teen and preteen girls for God. She has produced a number of wonderful resources for young girls and for their parents including the 30-Day Journaling Guide and a wonderful guide called 7 Easy Steps: Encouraging Your Daughter To Say No.

This week, Alyssa is debuting a brand new resource for parents of young girls: the Christian Charm School Workbook. The workbook is divided into four sessions that can be worked through as part of a small group or individually. The sessions aim to help young girls develop instill faith-based values, manners and etiquette while promoting confidence, spiritual growth and communication skills.

“I’ve talked to other parents who are concerned about the world their children are growing up in,” says Avant, “and as a mother myself, I understand their yearning for a simpler time. There is nothing ‘old-fashioned’ about being polite, poised, and confident. This book is just a way to help reinforce the values these young women have learned from their parents, their church, and their peers.”

Christian Charm School Workbook is now available from Beauty By Design Online and can be used as part of your daughter’s devotional time, as a mother-daughter learning tool together or as learning materials for a bible study group.

Back To School Link Love

You may have noticed that we’ve been talking a lot about Back To School lately, and it is that time of year. By now, most kids are back at school and families both public schooled and home schooled are settling into the school year routine once again. For many of us, that means a fresh concentration on our work, our businesses and other things we have neglected as we enjoyed the summer days with our children.

So how are you handling the return to school? Did you blog about it? I know I did, and I thought this would be a great chance to give a little link love to some of our readers. So – if you blogged about your children going back to school, add your link to the Mr Linky so we can all check it out!
