Kids In Business: Sites That Encourage The Kidpreneuer

August 12, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Have you been thinking about starting a business that the family can work at together?

Has the entrepreneur bug bitten your child?

Today I wanted to focus on websites that cater to helping your child(ren) and/or family find valuable information and resources that can help you accomplish your work at home dreams.

The first one that comes to mind is Show Kids The Money a site that has a bunch of business ideas for kids.

Show Kids The Money not only gives kids ideas for businesses but they provide articles that help kids (and parents, too) decide why they should start their own business but also gives them a list of helpful business tools.  Keep in mind that Mom & Dad might have to help them grow their business in the beginning.

Another great site to help kids start a business is Internet Based Kids.  Run by this teen’s family, they have the know-how to help you get started.

Be sure to sign up for their free parent’s guide to helping your child start their own business when you visit their site.

This site also has resources for kids interested in starting their own business.  In addition, they have a great parent FAQ section that will answer a lot of your questions.

Kids-In-Biz.com is full of great kids-in-biz articles, ideas and inspiration.

These sites are great examples of how easy it is for your ‘tween or teen to start their own business.  Encourage your kidpreneuer - you never know - you just might be working for them one day.

Teens In Business: Tessa

August 11, 2008

In honor of the upcoming Youth Day Carnival, we thought it would be appropriate to interview a teen business owner. We choose to interview Tessa, one of the two teen sisters behind Pre-Wrap.com about their success as teen entrepreneurs. If you have a young teen looking to earn a little money and be their own boss, check out Kids Business Ideas, a great eBook written by Tessa’s mother.

Can you start off by telling us a little about yourself?

I’m Tessa and I live in a small New England town. I’ll be a junior in high school this year and I LOVE playing volleyball. I also play flute in the wind ensemble, enjoy hanging around with my Special Olympic buddies, and am crazy about animals. If I’m not at volleyball, you should check the local pond ’cause I might be catching frogs.

Can you tell us a little about what you do and how you started?

It all started when I tried pre-wrap from my friend at a soccer game. I absolutely loved it and begged my mom to get me a roll. The rest is history. She couldn’t find it anywhere and ended up buying it in bulk on eBay. She told me to get rid of the extras by selling it to my friends and teammates. She told me that if I sold it to them, I could keep the money. Surprise! I sold it all and took orders for a bunch more.

How have your parents influenced your decision to start a business?

Both of my parents have their own business and life in our house is different than most. No one works any set hours or has to commute to an office, although I know my parents work hard at what they do. My mother was so excited when I came home with so many new orders, she sat me down and suggested that it might be a good side business for me and a way to make some extra cash for fun things.

How have your friends influenced your decision to start a business?

They didn’t really influence me to start, but they definitely help me to keep it going and build it. My teammates were excited when I brought ppre-wrap to the field and also helped me decide on new colors. I know if my friends love something, then I will be able to sell it to other teens. They are very supportive and even pack pre-wrap when they come to my house.

Do you find that your friends treat you differently when they find out about your business?

I get a little more attention and maybe respect when the story comes out. Sometimes people don’t believe me, but when I tell them the website they are surprised. They always come to me when they need pre-wrap. Some call me pre-wrap OCD. I guess it’s a little weird to have a business at my age, but it’s fun and I like the attention.

Do you find it more difficult to be taken seriously or does the internet take away most prejudices?

People ask me if it’s really my business. Mostly I find that people love our story - they love the fact that I am a teen and want to support us. Most of our customers are teens or parents of teens, so they think it’s cool.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Finding time to do everything on top of schoolwork and sports is the biggest challenge. Second would probably be maintaining a good amount of inventory.

What has been your biggest success?

Starting new colors has been our biggest success. We were the first to have hot pink pre-wrap, and now we have an exclusive color - lime green, which has been a huge hit.

How do you balance work and school?

It’s hard - there is so much work to be done. I have to hire help - usually family members.

To what do you attribute your success as a youth entrepreneur?

Kids know what their peers like and don’t like. I’m lucky that we have such a fun product that people really want - it practically sells itself.

Is there anything else that you want to share with the readers?

Believe in yourself! Selling doesn’t have to be hard. Find a product that people are hungry for and have fun with it. Make it your own. Put your own spin on things, and let your personality take over.

What is one thing you can’t do without in your business?

Pre-wrap! Haha! If the internet goes down, we’re in big trouble. Same goes for our shipping companies. And of course, our customers. Sounds basic, but it really is all true.

What advice would you give other youth wanting to start their own business?

You really need to start small and have fun with it. I started out with just my teammates and a small amount of product. I moved on to local tournaments, eBay, and my summer camps. When we added a one-page website, business began to boom. It’s really helpful to have a supportive family that can help out, especially with credit cards and other things that require you to be at least 18 years old. When I first started, I wasn’t even old enough to sign my own checks.

If you have a young teen looking to earn a little money and be their own boss, check out Kids Business Ideas, a great eBook written by Tessa’s mother.

Moms In Business: Leslie Truex

August 9, 2008

This week’s interview comes to us courtesy of Leslie Truex of

Helping people work at home since 1998
http://www.workathomesuccess.com

The Pajama Mama…where every day is casual day!
http://www.the-pajama-mama.com

What made you decide to be a work at home mom?

I had researched working from home right after I was married. I loved the idea of the flexibility and being my own boss. But it wasn’t until I had children that I found I really needed that flexibility. I didn’t like all the hassles that went with being a working mom and if I could have afforded it, I probably would have started out as a stay-at-home mom. But I needed the money so I searched for ways to work at home.

What is the nature of your business?

I have multiple income streams. I still telecommute part-time as an adoption social worker. I also provide work-at-home information, coaching and speaking through my website http://www.workathomesuccess.com.

I earn money through advertising and affiliate programs as well as coaching. I sold a book last year (The Work-At-Home Success Bible) that will be published by Adams Media in December and am working on a second book. I have found I like writing and am working on developing that as a more significant income stream. And I have a direct sales business that still sends me money every month even though I haven’t been very active in it. My goal is to put more time back into it but I haven’t quite created the plan for how I’m going to do that with all my current projects.

What made you decide that particular business?

My work-at-home related income really came about by sharing my experiences in other work-at-home avenues. Before settling on being an infopreneur and coach as well as telecommuting social worker, I sold real estate, did B2B sales, conducted online research, tried biz ops, and a host of other programs. This has given me a wide range of experiences that I use to help people who want to work at home. It think it gives my site and coaching credibility because I’m speaking from experience. I know the challenges and pitfalls. I know the scams and questionable schemes. I know what it takes to succeed.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Time and patience. If I only had one income stream, time wouldn’t be a factor. But I can’t seem to let any of my projects go and I’m always thinking of new ideas that I want to try. I also would like things to move along faster than the they usually do.

What has been your biggest success?

I feel like the fact that I’ve been working at home for over 10 years is a success. But I’m also proud of selling a book.

What is the best way you promote your business under $10.00? under $50 worth it at any cost?

I try not to spend any money any more. I have an AdWords account that drives traffic to Work-At-Home Success as a way to build the list. I spend about $75 per month on that. I’m thinking about ending that campaign. Mostly I like to use articles and press releases. They are free and provide more creditability than ads. I do pay for services related to that. I use iSnare now to publish articles. And I bought PR submission software that submits to free PR sites. I also submit articles and PR to BestSyndication.com. Blogging and networking are also regular efforts. And I’m working more on expanding online speaking such as podcast or online radio interviews. So money I spend is usually to support a marketing campaign (ie article distribution service). I don’t buy advertising any more.

How do you balance work and family?

My kids are in school, so during the school year I work hard to do all I want to do during the day. I also try to take Friday off as my Mom’s Day Out day to give myself some time and get my head back together so I can be a better mom and wife.  During the summer, its a bit harder, but I have a deal with my kids that if I can work until 2 or so, then I’m all theirs. That means I can’t sleep in too late, but that’s okay because I get more time to play with them. It was much harder when they were younger. I worked in 2 hour shifts and lots of evenings. I try not to work at night anymore.

To what do you attribute your success as a WAHM?

I researched, tried, and when I failed (which I did several times) never gave up.

What impact has blogging made on your career?

I think it has expanded my market. Since it has new information all the time, its a great compliment to the static information on my site. It has help search engine ranking as well. All my new ventures and some old ones I’m revamping are on blogging platforms (WordPress) because its fast and easy, and search engines love them.

Can you recommend any resources for WAHMS who are just starting out, or perhaps trying to make the transition from the workplace?

Well, I can’t not toot my own horn. WorkAtHomeSuccess.com offers lots of great information on affording to come home, choosing a business, finding or creating a work-at-home job and avoiding scams. I post jobs every weekday on my blog (they are fed to the site’s home page as well). And, I have a book that is the COMPLETE book on working at home including telecommuting, home business, online and off that will be out in December. Its the book I wish I had when I started out.

There are many good WAHM websites (WAHM.com, HBWM.com, CWAHM.com, etc) but I would suggest finding the money to invest in MomMasterminds. Through it women can get tons of information to find and flesh out an income idea, support, feedback, coaching, cheers and more from women who have done it.

What can you tell us about your other ventures?

I have a new blog called Better Living On the Web which covers web based resources to make life better and easier. I’m currently pitching a book on this topic to my publisher.  I own two other sites related to working at home, however, they are undergoing an overhaul as I determine the best way to make use of them (JobsAtHomeSuccess.com and MomsAtHomeSuccess.com). This is an example of having too many projects and not enough time. They both offer terrific potential, but aren’t doing much right now. I also mentioned that I telecommute still. I’m the supervisor of domestic adoptions for ABC Adoptions in Virginia. I like that I get to keep my feet wet in social work and helping build families.

Is there anything else that you want to share with the readers?

Learn, plan, do!

What is one thing you can’t do without in your business?

Fast Internet and iGoogle.

What one thing should be avoided at all costs?

My first thought is scams, but I think you probably mean something else. I think people need to avoid hype and programs that promise fast, easy money. Emotions are important as enthusiasm and excitement help fuel action, however don’t let emotions override common sense. Also, avoid working without a plan.

What’s the biggest business killer?

Failure to act. Working at home isn’t something that you can fit into fleeting free moments. Its needs daily action … the type of action that makes money.

What advice do you wish someone would’ve shared with you when you first started out?

Working at home isn’t so much about what you choose, its whether or not you’ll choose to do it. When people look for fast, easy, and cheap, they usually fail because its either a scam or they don’t do the work. Because working at home is hard people should focus on something that they have experience in already such as job skills, hobbies, passions, etc. I believe success comes from 1) Deep burning desire (the type that keeps you going when everything is failing); 2) Research and self-education about working at home; 3) Consistent action and 4) Never, ever quitting.

Moms In Business: Cindi Matthews

August 4, 2008

This week’s interview is with Cindi Matthews of Moomette’s Magnificents Olde Towne Shoppes.

When you go to Cindi’s site make sure to take your time and look around. Cindi has a ton of information through out her site.

If you have any questions for Cindi just leave them in the comments and we’ll be sure to let her know.

What made you decide to be a work at home mom?
I have been working full-time since my youngest daughter, now 21, was age 2. I spend the majority of my day on the internet for research purposes, and want to take this talent and retire and work from home. I completed my B.S. degree online after a lapse of over 20 years, and am quite an advocate of technology. I’d like to be able to stay home, quite the commute, and take care of my grandchildren, while still staying active and making a living.

What is the nature of your business?
I am a collector of Vintage Antiques and Collectibles, and started my online business by opening an eBay store where I quickly became a Power Seller. I’ve since opened an online ebiz website of my own, where I offer handcrafted unique baby items, home decor, jewelry, gifts, as well as vintage collectibles.

I am also an independent consultant for several companies offering gourmet food items, natural skin care products, mineral makeup and home decor, such as candles.

What made you decide that particular business?
I inherited many vintage collectibles from my grandmother who lived to be over 101, and have an appreciation and eye for fine things. It was a natural for me to progress to looking for items to offer to the general public, who may not readily have access to such items.

What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge so far has been scheduling time to get my businesses off the ground and running before I actually am able to retire. I still have a full-time job, as well as family responsibilities. I put in at least a full day’s worth of work marketing my online business, and taking care of details, after I get home from the office and take care of my home responsibilities.

What has been your biggest success?
I think my biggest success has been the recognition I have received from the eBay Community, and participating as a Moderator on an eBay Forum. I also am well recognized in the blogging community as an authority on WAHM matters, in the short time that I have been blogging.

What is the best way you promote your business under $10.00? under $50 worth it at any cost?
I think the best way to promote one’s business for under $10 would be to sign up for a domain, create a blog, and promote through a Free Webs site or similar.

For under $50, one could have a domain name, and an advertisement-free blog or website through a similar hosting site.

How do you balance work and family?
I stay up many hours into the night after my family has gone to bed. I get very little sleep.

To what do you attribute your success as a WAHM?
I consider my success as a WAHM due to the fact that I’m a Baby Boomer, and not exactly a newcomer. I have over 30 years of business experience, both in management and retail. I have a B.S. in Business Administration. I have seen trends come and go, and I recognize all the gimmicks. I can read between the lines when something doesn’t seem quite right.

What impact has blogging made on your career?
I have made friends from all over the globe, and can rely on many of them to share their knowledge with me, as well as their errors and successes. It has enabled me to see what other people are exploring, and perhaps if I need to change direction, or develop a new interest.

Can you recommend any resources for WAHMS who are just starting out, or perhaps trying to make the transition from the workplace?
The best start would be do join some WAHM business forums, and ask questions! Fire away with those questions, because many WAHMs are willing to share what they have learned. There are also many excellent blogs. Read, Read, and Read more! Research is the answer.

Is there anything else that you want to share with the readers?
I offer product reviews from the perspective of a Baby Boomer who has seen products come and go. I’ve seen the improvements on products that were new to market when I was a young mom. As a grandmother, I marvel at what is being offered now, and can usually tell if it’s a product that will succeed, or need improvement.

What is one thing you can’t do without in your business?
PayPal. I really like the ease and security that PayPal offers. It is a highly recognizable method of secure payment around the globe.

What one thing should be avoided at all costs?
I think people who are dishonest and try to manipulate the system are usually spotted right away. I can tell from forum posts those who try to circumvent the rules and self-promote. I’m a pretty good judge of character.

What’s the biggest business killer?
The used-car salesman pitch. I can’t stand high-pressure sales, at everyone’s expense for the sake of trying to promote a product. If someone is interested, they’ll purchase from you without being harassed.

What advice do you wish someone would’ve shared with you when you first started out?
Find a mentor; ask questions; thank them often.

Moms In Business: Alethea Anderson

July 26, 2008

Welcome to another installment of our WAHM Interviews.

This week’s interview is with Alethea Anderson of Shop Gold Candles

What made you decide to be a work at home mom?

When I was pregnant back in 1998 I ‘thought’ I could handle going back to work.  The moment I held my daughter in my arms I knew I wanted to be home.
It took me 3 years to finally take the plunge and quit…after I missed the first crawl, first tooth, first step…

I would go to the park on my lunch break watching all the Moms playing with their kids.  I’d be in tears I wanted to be home so bad.  To add to it I listened to Dr. Laura on the radio, who every single day, told me I could do it if I really wanted to.

Well I went to her website and filled out the form where you calculate how much you are ‘really’ making once you take out the expenses of commuting, child care etc… and, well, quitting was the best thing I ever did!

What is the nature of your business?

The direct sales industry, I represent a company called Gold Canyon Candles who has been around since 1997.  We offer clean burning candles in strong scents as well as other high quality home aromatics. I earn an income
and rewards based on my personal sales as well as the sales of those on my team who I coach!

What made you decide that particular business?

After dabbling in the industry on and off since 1993 I finally found my passion in candles!  I am a self-proclaimed ‘candle freak’ and when I stumbled upon the candle industry I realized I had found gold.  Candles are a consumable item, that is affordable and used in 8 of 10 homes which makes for the perfect product. People use them for themselves, as well as gifts!  Even in this ‘tough economy’ as some are calling it, I’ve had no wane in sales as candles are an affordable ‘feel good’ item.  So where some may be
cutting in some areas, they are not cutting their candle habits!

What has been your biggest challenge?

Helping team members that don’t believe in themselves.  It is difficult to keep the fire lit within people that are extremely negative and don’t have a passion for success.

What has been your biggest success?

Online marketing!  I have a niche for marketing and generating leads via the web.  I enjoy it and find it extremely fun!

What is the best way you promote your business under $10.00? under $50 worth it at any cost?

I pass out tea lights to candle lovers; it’s a fabulous method to get scented candles into hands for less than ONE dollar!   I online market like crazy and I don’t pay a penny.  I utilize the free marketing sources
available all over the internet.

How do you balance work and family?

Well, us WAHMs know we definitely have more than one job!   We are Mommy,Wife, cook, chauffer, maid and more.  My goal is to keep the house always ready for the unexpected guest or customer.  I can not function when the home is in disarray!  When things are organized, I work my best!  Always taking time for a trip to the park with my daughter, a dinner out or to snuggle up and watch TV with the hubby is very important and try to take weekends OFF.  Make family time count, make it quality family time!

To what do you attribute your success as a WAHM?

I refuse to accept failure as an option.  I have passion, I have fire, I have drive to propel me forward.

What impact has blogging made on your career?

For me blogging is a fun way to share ideas and get thoughts out into cyber space.  I have 3 main blogs plus little ones here and there.  It’s a good way to reach others of a similar nature as well as a wonderful way for people to get to know ‘you’ via your writing style, articles and musings.

Can you recommend any resources for WAHMS who are just starting out, or perhaps trying to make the transition from the workplace?

I recommend organized places such as this site, momsinablog.com to gain knowledge and information.  Also I suggest WAHMs google the term ‘wahm’ or ‘wahm websites’ to find some of the other wonderful sites out there.  iVillage.com has been around for years as has wahm.com and then there is the newer CafeMom.com.  There is a wealth of information available on the internet, use it!  Take time to research, talk to people, interview people and network, network, network!

What can you tell us about your other ventures?

I’m a believer of multiple streams of income!  I dabble with affiliate programs, ebay and writing too as other means of generating income.  I only recommend this for people who won’t get off track and spread themselves too thin!  In the beginning it’s best to focus on ONE home business and masterit, before you move into other things.

Is there anything else that you want to share with the readers?

When looking for a home business, find YOUR passion.  Don’t get caught in someone else’s passion.  Find a company or start your own company that you are passionate about.  Analyze yourself, do you like to cook, scrapbook, decorate, read…do you take pride in cosmetics, kids toys and beyond.  Find a company that resonates with who you are and what you do already.  When you find the company that has you up at night thinking, your head spinning with excitement and the possibilities - then that’s the one!  Remember, be
excited because YOU are excited.  Not because someone ‘else’ is excited.  If someone else you know has a ‘car’ from a company, that does not mean you will do it too - UNLESS you have the passion and the fire for the PRODUCT that company represents!  I can’t say it enough, find your passion and a product you’ll use daily, speak of daily and love daily!

What is one thing you can’t do without in your business?

My computer!  It is the ground roots, my home base, my major means of communicating with team members, customers and prospects!

What one thing should be avoided at all costs?

Never give up!  Don’t QUIT and avoid negative feelings, negative energy, negative people and negative thoughts.

What’s the biggest business killer?

Not believing in you and letting the word ‘no’ interfere with success. Many people let the wind get taken out of their sails when they hear ‘no’ a few times.  You have to realize there will be ‘no-s’ and each ‘no’ brings
you that much closer to a ‘YES!’

What advice do you wish someone would’ve shared with you when you first
started out?

I wish someone told me more about residual income and how building a team could really create a substantial income.  Many leaders it seems are in it
for the ‘recruit’ but not so much for helping their team.  If someone is gong to recruit, they also have to set an example and lead!  My ‘ah ha’moment was finally in 2005 when I got my first team member ‘on accident’ and I then got a ‘check’.  I realized ‘WOW - this could be a good thing’ and that was just the beginning…

Have a question for Alethea?  Please feel free to ask your direct sales questions for Alethea in the comments below.

Turn Your Talents Into Income!

July 14, 2008

I am always amazed by the number of talented moms out there! The truth is, most moms have a talent of some type. Some are great at sewing clothes, diapers and/or other items. Other moms are talented at creating their own products be it natural soaps, herbal skin care, healing balms, etc. There are women who do activities on a daily basis that I can only dream of doing!

For other women, their own life choices have developed experiences and talents for them. The mom who decided to homeschool and discovered a talent for designing home school curriculums or writing interesting lesson plans. I know Moms with large families of grown children who could make a million bucks if they wrote a book with their parenting success secrets!

So why haven’t more of these women taken their interest or hobby to the Internet to earn some income with it. If you asked them, you would usually get responses like: “I don’t know the first thing about how to build a website.” or “I wouldn’t have any idea how to market my business online.”

Yet, you may have a ton of knowledge in your head that could make you money on the world wide web. Or maybe you have a creative skill like sewing. Even if you don’t have a physical product to sell, you can still make money online marketing other people’s products, either through Direct Sales, Affiliate Marketing or Drop Shipping.

Why not get the knowledge out of your head and into a business that could earn you some cash!

The truth is, building a business on the Internet isn’t as difficult as most Moms assume. Whatever aspect of an online business it is that is intimidating you and holding you back from getting started, there is probably a simple option out there that would take care of it for you. Don’t know HTML? There are many web builders and programs that use a WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get - editor instead, making website building simpler and much more affordable.

Some website hosts even include professional looking website templates and beautiful stock photos, so you don’t even have to hire a web designer to get a great looking site online anymore.

What is more, there are resources online that can teach you what you need to know in order to get traffic to your site and market yourself. Why not ask around at a work at home Moms message board and see what other Moms in business recommend for learning these techniques?

Don’t let a small budget deter you from starting a website. For less than $25, you can buy a domain name and website hosting for one year. As you start to earn income, you can reinvest in other tools and learning that will help you grow your profits.

Building a business on the Internet has never been easier. Don’t let fear or a lack of technical know-how stop you from meeting your income goals. Look into networking groups and search out eBooks like the Natural Mom Business Guide, a complete learning course including audio and video tutorials, cheat sheets and an ebook for the Mom who wants to take her love of natural family living and turn it into an online business. Reach out and ask for help and you’ll soon be up and running.
