Anyone who knows me pretty well knows that I am a big supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness. My mom and her sister were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 two weeks apart and since then my life has been completely different. This past August, I completed my very first 3 Day walk where I walked 60 miles in a weekend. And I just signed up to do it again. This unexpected turn in my life has caused me to stop and look twice if I see if a pink ribbon on a product or hear the words “breast cancer” on the radio. I tend to tune in a little bit more carefully.
That’s how I heard about Nordie’s at Noon. I was driving in my car on my way to work a few years ago and I stopped on NPR for a moment. They were conducting an interview with the authors of this book. My mom and her sister had been talking about writing the book, so I called her immediately to tell her about it. Since the book was written from several points of perspective, it may help her in writing her book. That same week I took the kids to the library and found the book on the “new releases” shelf.
It didn’t take me long to get through this book. Just like the misconception that men can’t get breast cancer has been shattered, this book eliminates the concept that only post-menopausal women can get breast cancer. This book is the story of four women: Patti, diagnosed with breast cancer at age 24, Jana, diagnosed at age 27, Jennifer, diagnosed at age 27, and Kim, diagnosed at age 30. They bonded as friends for so many reasons and once a month, they would meet at Nordstrom’s at noon to visit (hence the title of the book).
This book is a wonderful reminder to pay attention to you health, no matter what age you are. The book is touching, open, and incredibly emotional. The women take turns writing about their diagnoses, the personal aspects of treatment, and for some of them, the recurrence of their cancer. I highly recommend this book as it can motivate you to do regular self-exams (all four women found their cancer this way), it will show the importance of never giving up, and it will demonstrate the power of friendship through hard times.
