Green Your Vacation

We all reach a place from time to time where stress levels are high, and you just need to get away and rest for a while. How tempting to just jump in the car, leave th fast lane behind, and take that elusive, real vacation. The type of vacation that you return from refresh and worry free. Unfortunately, for most of us, the cost of fuel and motels combined with the stress of packing and unpacking takes a lot away from your vacation time. So how can you have an enjoyable, and green, vacation?

There are a number of ways to have a green vacation. One simply way is to stay close to home. Jump in the car and head down to a nearby river for a day of peace a quiet. If you don’t have time to get away, you can even have a mini vacation at home. Turn off the phones and spend the day relaxing out in the yard, go for a walk, read a good book. Like camping? Set up a tent, build a campfire and camp out for the night.

If you have the time and the desire to pack up and get away, there are still great options for you. Opt for public transportation as much as possible – a cab, bus, train, boat, etc. Walk if you can, or take a bike, whatever is available.

You can also green your accommodations. Go natural and camp out if you want. If you prefer a hotel (like me), look for a green hotel. Many hotels are making themselves more environmentally friendly with non toxic & biodegradable wash solutions, low flow shower heads, solar energy, etc. When calling hotels, as if they are part of the Green Hotel Initiative, or visit the National Geographic page for Sustainable destinations for hotel ideas.

Of course, planning ahead is wise as well. Practice waste management, and look for green alternatives whenever possible. You will be able to enjoy your vacation knowing you are minimizing your overall impact on the environment as well.
